Starting Point: The main gate of the Venetian Castle in Chora.
Walking through History with a View of the Cretan Sea
The M01 route is not just a walk; it is the ultimate introduction to the charm of Kythira. Connecting the stately capital (Chora) with its cosmopolitan port (Kapsali), this path offers panoramic views of three seas and some of the most breathtaking images of the Mediterranean.
The adventure begins under the ramparts of the Venetian Castle. As the path winds around the rock, the view opens up to the south:
The impressive Trachilas.
The mysterious rocky islet Chytra with its triangular shape.
On the horizon, on clear days, the peaks of the mountains of Crete emerge.
2. Into the Pine Forest
Leaving the historic stone, you enter a dense pine forest. The smell of resin and the natural shade make the route enjoyable. From above, Kapsali is revealed with its two characteristic bays in the shape of an “O”, while in the distance the monastery of Agios Ioannis on the Cliff can be seen.
3. English Architecture and Hidden Beaches
Descending, you will cross an elegant stone bridge from the British era. At this point, take a look to the right: the hidden, turquoise beach Sparagario looks like a fjord between the rocks. A few minutes later, your feet will step onto the sandy beach of Kapsali.
The Return (Circular Experience)
To complete your experience, you can go uphill from the main road. You will pass by the historic Primary School, discover small Byzantine churches at the foot of the rock and get lost in the whitewashed streets of Chora until you reach the starting point again.
Expert Advice: Start the route late in the afternoon. The sunset from the Castle path “paints” the sea with colors that will remain unforgettable to you.
